What is breast reconstruction?

It rebuilds a breast after partial or total removal of the breast. The removal of the mammary gland is called “mastectomy“. The removal of the tumor is called a “lumpectomy“.

The “quadrantectomy” is the removal of a substantial portion of the breast.

The breast may be removed for cancer, for diffuse fibrocystic mastopathies or of cancer prevention in patients genetically predisposed.

What is mastectomy?

It’s  the removal of the mammary gland. Often now a days early detection allows you to keep areolas and nipples.

Why would you want a breast reconstruction?

Breast cancer

Breast is an important part of your body and your beauty, but unfortunately the gland may have a problem. Breast cancer may require a partial or total removal of the breasts in order to heal.

Phobia of cancer

Genetic testing does not exclude the possibility to be still predisposed to breast cancer: some patients with a high predisposition  can resort to mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

genetic predisposition to cancer

When some women of the same family have had breast or ovarian cancer they should resort to a genetic test. If this is positive you can choose to stay under observation  or to directly remove the mammary glands. In this case the reconstruction is bilateral.

Poland syndrome

Sometimes the breast is not formed from birth: in this case it can be rebuilt.

Fibrocystic disease

In the presence of diffuse cysts, even in menopause, you can remove the breasts and  resort to a bilateral reconstruction.

You and Dr. Borra will choose the right technique

Reconstruction with implants
Dr. Borra will reconstruct the breasts with breast implants, such as those used for cosmetic breast augmentation. One can resort to an acellular reconstructive tissue matrix over the prosthesis to support tissue regeneration and safeguard the prosthesis.

Reconstruction with flap surgery
It is employed especially after radiotherapy and in general when the chest tissues are too thin. The flaps are made of a section of tissue, subcutaneous tissue, muscle groups and sometimes also of muscle. They are taken from the abdomen and the back and are relocated  on the chest where they are modeled.

Oncoplastic
Born from oncology and plastic surgery fused together, it’s a technique that Dr. Borra uses to reconstruct the breast in case of partial removal. The remaining breast is shaped to compensate for that removed.

What can you expect after surgery?

The same day

You will be constantly monitored and observed until you are able to go home. Sometimes you’ll have to stay overnight. Someone will have to take you home and drive. At home you will need to be assisted for a day or two. At home it is important to rest with a pillow to raise your arms and back. Remember to buy the medicines prescribed before surgery and keep them at hand. Please have ice packs available to put on the chest.

The first week

In the first few days your breasts will be covered with a dressing and a bra provided by the staff. One can not take a shower until the dressing is removed. Do not lift anything heavier than 10 kg. Do not do exercises, but if you feel like walking you can do so. Usually four days after surgery Dr. Borra takes away the dressing and you will see your new breasts for the first time. A bit of burning and itching are normal. The prostheses may seem a little high, but in a few weeks will reach the final result.

Six weeks

After a week, most patients return to work, wearing the special bra exactly as Dr. Borra prescribed so that the breast heals well and the prosthesis position is correct. For a few weeks you will still have to be careful not to stain yourself or lifting heavy weights. The scars are still a little visible.

One year

You’ll see yourself  beautiful. All burning and itching should be gone and the scars will be less visible.
